“The bear that could not sleep” is a 1939 animated short (8:37 minutes), directed by Rudolf Ising for MGM as part of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Barney Bear series. Released by MGM on June 10, 1939, the short film is notable for the first appearance of Barney Bear. Ising created the character Barney Bear in the late 1930s for MGM and based the sleepy-looking character partly on himself.

Story

As autumn approaches, Barney Bear prepares himself for his long winter hibernation, but his surroundings keep him awake till spring.
