Brideshead Revisited, a novel by Evelyn Waugh, published in 1945, is the story of people who are desperate to hold on to their own piece of England. Sebastian Flyte, a young man from good upbringing, is living in his own little world. He studies in Oxford, but he's more with his head with Aloysius, his Teddy Bear, then his study. Aloysius is his faithful companion who he hugs and abuses in turns. He rides with his boss in an open-top Morris on journey to Italy and other countries in Europe. Just as Sebastian, Aloysius is spoiled and neglected in one. He owns a hairbrush from ivory with the inscription 'Aloysius', but the forgetful Sebastian achieves it to leave the bear in a cab once on his way to university.
Well, Aloysius is, like all bears, sometimes abuse, but mostly cuddled.
